A few weeks ago I noticed that one of my older (60s-ish) male coworkers had a nice personal electric heater under his desk, which I complimented him on and we briefly chatted about. He told me he got it for 2-3k on Amazon and showed me a few similar listings. Well, this week I was out for 2 days for medical reasons, and when I returned what should I find under my desk but my very own brand-new personal heater with a note reading “present for you <3” (he does speak pretty good English, but we have mostly chatted in Japanese in the past).
What’s the best way to respond? I already verbally thanked him today, but I should definitely give him a thank-you card, right? And how about a small present in return? Or is that not necessary? I’ve never gotten a gift this big before out of the blue- I’ve gotten a few small trinkets, like 500 yen worth, in the past- so i don’t really know how to handle it, or the ‘proper’ way to handle it. And like- a gift this size isn’t weird, is it? Like, I’m hoping I don’t have to read any weird intentions into it, right? He’s a very chill guy, always been pretty nice to me, so I’m assuming it’s just a pure act of kindness.
