Hello everyone!

I am currently an undergrad student at Concordia University (Quebec, Canada) in Computer Science and I would be really interested to do an exchange program in Japan. My university offers exchange program and has partnered with some Japanese Universities, but the only one I could really attend because of my program would be Japan-Hiroshima City University to do some elective courses.

Even though it would be amazing to go and live there for a year, I much prefer big cities and I’m honestly quite scared not adapting to the culture because I don’t speak much Japanese (N4 level). Every time I look at my possibilities, I feel like Tokyo would be a better choice for me.
​
Since my university does not have a partner in Tokyo, I would have to apply with the “Visit Fee Payment Option”, but I’m left wondering if my odds of getting accepted even exist because I would be a “Fake” exchange student…
​
So I guess my question is: Do Japanese universities accept exchange students from non-partner universities?

I don’t know if any of you can help me, but I don’t suppose there’s anything to lose by asking!

I know Keio does but it’s probably harder to get credit for it
Just saying Hiroshima is a huge city in of itself. Plus, it’s location is actually nice surrounded with things other than just city like Tokyo 😅
Plus, it’s got/had a large tourist industry with the peace memorial Park and museum. Honestly, would recommend Hiroshima with your uni. Plus, you can always visit other places like Tokyo for a weekend or something
Nice to see some Montréalais here! A lot of universities are not accepting students from non-partner schools. If it does, it would prob be something like a summer program, hence you likely won’t be able to transfer the credits back.

Hiroshima is one of the larger cities in Japan with a population around double that of Quebec City (around half way between Quebec City and Montreal). Its a great city with its own unique feel.
Tokyo is more like Toronto. A great big generic blob of a city.
