Why is the compound kanji for ‘spider’ 蜘蛛 made up of 2 kanji that also mean spider individually?

At least, that’s what Jisho shows me. It seems strangely redundant, doesn’t it? But it intrigues me, perhaps there’s something interesting in this etymology.
