Advice Needed: Selecting a Long-term Phone Provider in Tokyo

Hi, I’m about to arrive in Tokyo on a J-find (Job seeking) visa soon, and I have some questions regarding choosing a phone provider.

In my research online, I found companies such as Sakuramobile and Mobal that specifically cater to foreigners. They offer long-term phone numbers with minimal paperwork, English support, and even eSIM options, which sounds almost too good to be true.

My question is, do phone numbers from these companies function exactly the same as those from domestic providers like Docomo, Au, or Rakuten? Can they receive verification codes, or be used to register for accounts (such as bank accounts, etc.)? Are there any hidden catches?

I’d really appreciate your help.
