I’m a freshman late into my first year of uni in the US, and I’m planning to do a year-long study abroad in Japan after I wrap up my second year. My main thing is that I need to decide where to apply to. I’m really conflicted, since there are a few good routes to take. The first one I’m considering is a foreign studies school in a mid-size city, namely NUFS (also because it’s cheap and my family’s not made of money). I’ve also heard that going to a regional school in a smaller area is better for actually speaking Japanese for survival and just throughout the day, as opposed to a place where the students will want to speak English with you. I’m not really opposed to living in a rural area without much to do since that’s where I’ve always lived in the US anyways. However, I’m also wondering if going to a school in Tokyo would be best, precisely because it’s a big city, different from what I’m used to, and everything to do is in Tokyo. But I don’t wanna underestimate the benefits of the other two types as well. So if y’all have any thoughts/opinions, please share them!
