Don’t give up, learning is always an ongoing process

I feel like I should give people some words of encouragement. When I was younger about 4-5 years old I ended up moving to the Phillipines due to my mom being unable to provide for us. I stayed there for about 6 months and was basically fluent in the language and forgetting English. My mom was able to move back to the states and provide for us, but when I started school in the 1st grade, I had a learning and speech deficit due to only understanding Tagalog. It took me about another 6 months to relearn the english language, having to take time out of class and during recess with a speech therapist. The best way I was taught was by exposure. Practicing reading out loud each and every word. She also Utilized flashcards and match making games so I could be able to speak english. But what really helped was continous practice and reading. Eventually, I no longer needed a speech therapist and was able to speak english.

It’s okay to take break, but keep going. Expose yourself more to reading materials and you’ll learn the language eventually. Don’t stress yourself too much about N5-N1. Learn Kanji through exposure, not individually. Kanji in a way is basically similar to how we are able to read words that are combined. Like sourdough. Sour by definition is something is acidic, while dough can mean either money or a mixture flour and liquid. But together the definition of sourdough can mean a type of bread or a veteran inhabitant and especially an old-time prospector of Alaska or northwestern Canada (straight from the dictionary).

Basically to sum it all up, don’t give up. Learning anything new takes time, but to truly master something can take longer. 頑張ってください。

  1. I suck, but once a day every day for about 3-10 minutes I do a lesson. I have been doing so for neatly 300 days.

  2. I just listen to Japanese passively daily for around 5 hours. I spend around 2 hours cooking, 1 hour outside walking and another 2 doing other tasks that I can squeeze some Japanese audiobooks in. Using time that would have been otherwise wasted anyway.

  3. Hiiii, I wanna ask something from this community but I need karma, could you be kind to help me gain karma?

    ありがとうございます。

  4. Lately I’ve been struggling with the fact of barely passing the JLPT 3 when people had much more compelling scores than me…

Really made me feel like I still don’t have the level and how much effort I’ll have to put forward to get the N2 :/

  5. Learning is really just about consistency, showing up everyday for 5mins, 10mins , 15 whatever. You do it everyday you’ll be good. I did 2-3hours everyday for 1 year and barely passed N2, working in a japanese company but I still get lost if they say more than 2 sentences. Learning never stops..

  6. Thank you very much for your advice! I have been studying at a traditional school for two years now. I’ve studied a lot of grammar and about 120 kanjis until now. But I got very demotivated bacause we spoke very little. Now I am going to speak with another Sensei in order to practice more conversation. I think your advice about immersion and reading is very important. Although it’s difficult at first, reading is very rewarding. I am using the Easy Japanese (Todaii) app.
