Sorry if this has been answered but I couldn’t find a thread in the past with a satisfying answer.
I’m Australian and expecting a baby soon with my Japanese wife. I *think* I know the general rules about dual citizenship with Aus/Japan, and that my son will be born without Australian citizenship until we apply for it with the Australian gov on his behalf, then the whole choice process will happen later in his life.
We’re planning to spend a few years in Australia from 2025 or 2026 so we’re thinking about getting citizenship for him sooner rather than later.
My question is, is there anyone who has gone through the Australian dual citizenship process and has any general advice about it? In terms of wait times, paperwork, what not to do, any paperwork on the Japanese side… really anything, big or small, would help.
The Australian government websites are a little bare bones.
