I haven’t had the funds for sushi lately. My SO made me sushi last night for my birthday. Using spam, imitation crabs and the like to keep cost down. Still one of the best sushi meals I’ve had :)

  1. That’s amazingly thoughtful. Good on you for having someone who clearly loves you.

  2. Nothing wrong with using spam, I love spam sushi and musubi.

This came out rather lovely, your SO should be proud of their work.

  3. I’m pretty sure imitation crab is used in majority of all sushi 🍣 real snow and king crab is expensive

  4. Heads up you can do raw at home with the right methods
    Really saves money that way

  5. Is it bad that I still don’t know what SO means and thinks it stands for sex offender?

  6. Another “cheap” ingredient is Tamago, or egg with soy sauce and sugar. I made a ton of it when I was unemployed as our Friday night dinner and box of wine. Looks good!

  7. Imitation crab is one of my favorites! Another good one is smoked salmon. It’s always right next to the imitation crab in any of the stores I’ve gotten it from. It has that kinda cold, soft texture that raw fish does, but since it’s actually already cooked, you don’t have to worry about or pay for top-quality/sushi-grade fish.
