Freaking out on numbers

Every time I try to learn japanese, i get really frustrated over how it has multiple readings and when to read them..

i find vocabulary and grammar to be much easier than counting things.

So counting is easy, いち、に、さん、よん、ろく、 and so on..

Counting things is when I find it banging my head on the wall lol.
first i heard of 7 things. nana tsu, EASY, right? no, here’s something to mess you up. it’s not ni tsu, it’s FUTATSU, it’s not ichi tsu, it’s HITO TSU, why HITO? that’s supposed to be person!! what, you want to say one person? it’s HITO RI! huh?? where did RI that come from?

mittsu? this is where i stopped for today.

is there some kind of guide to help me remember counting numbers and things easier? or any tips?
