Any Internet Troubleshooting Experts (not basic) – Unable to access some sites

Hi, I was wondering if anyone had any experience with this setup/situation:

\- Provider: NTT

\- Secondary Provider : AsahiNet

\- Equipment: NTT-provided ONU, Ubiquiti Dream Machine SE, Unifi UAPs

Issue: I am unable to access some sites such as Github.com, additionally LINE does not work on mobile phone when using Wifi (but no problems on mobile data). Line itself is one of the problem domains as I cannot for example access [https://contact-cc.line.me](https://contact-cc.line.me) via my home internet connection (and probably tied to LINE overall not working).

I can however access these sites with no problem when I use a VPN. I actually have a 2nd wifi that uses an always-on VPN so that I can switch SSIDs and just automatically be on the VPN connection. This was setup permanently as a counter to the above problem.

What I have tried: Changing DNS servers, modifying MSS Clamping window, turning off almost every “extra” the router provides (not the NTT ONU as I do not have direct access). Problem persist. Also tried contacting AsahiNET but that has been a dead end even though I have sent traceroutes, etc.

What I suspect: Some sort of routing issue, which would explain why I have no problems over a VPN (as the routing path goes from my house to the VPN provider) with no problems, but the same requests, using the same DNS nameservers, simply do not work and I get timeouts.

I’m past my own technical capability and was hoping someone else might have seen this or had some ideas.

Also worth noting: I have a friend who lives nearby, uses NTT but not AsahiNet, and he has the same issues accessing LINE when on Wifi and also has no issues when using a VPN.

Apologies if this isn’t the right sub, I chose it based on Google results showing a few similar posts here.

Thanks in advance.

  1. I used to have the same setup (now on bigglobe) I’d look into your ipv6 settings and see if that helps. I use this site to test mine. https://test-ipv6.com/

I believe you can just turn off the ipv6 setting and if those sites load without issue, then you found what’s causing the problem.

  2. I remember back in the day Asahinet used to have a bunch of babysitting features on their accounts that you’d have to go turn off to get it to behave properly. You’d log in on their website and in the profile you could turn stuff off.

  3. Unrelated, but how are your speeds with the UDM SE? Did you bother to do any workarounds to get IPv6 working, or are you just using IPv4? I’ve been using one for about a year, and I’m wondering if it’s worth going through the nightmare trial and error of trying to get IPv6 working to improve my speeds.
