My company was kind enough to buy futons for my wife and I for our apartment here, but being from the US, sleeping on the floor the last two weeks has not been fun for my back or shoulders.
The beds in the two hotels we stayed at prior to our moving in were also some of the hardest mattresses I’ve ever laid on.
With those trends in mind, I’m guessing that’s the norm here. That said, I do like mattresses with a bit of give that let’s me sink into it slightly. A lot of the first listings I see on Amazon say “high density”, so I’m guessing that’s the Japanese equivalent of extra firm mattresses in the US.
I’m afraid of buying a mattress and it too being a slab of concrete wrapped in cotton. Any tips are greatly appreciated.
Bonus question: those who came from bed-oriented upbringings who still sleep on futons, How did you adapt? Or did you just get used to it with time?
