Work visa expires monday, company said I can just switch to tourist in a day
Hello everyone,
I’m in a bit of a predicament. I’ve been working in Japan for the last six months as a German citizen. My work visa is expiring on Monday, and I informed my company in May of last year that I would like to stay in Japan as a tourist after my work contract ends. They said it shouldn’t be a problem; I just need to go to the visa office on the day it expires.
However, despite German citizens not needing a visa to enter Japan for tourism for up to 90 days, the resources I’ve found suggest that it’s not as simple as just going to the visa bureau.
I apologize if this post violates rule 11 of the subreddit. I’m just slowly running out of options. The German embassy could not provide me with information, and the company is not staffed on weekends.
Is there anywhere that I can call even on the weekend?
Do you think my only option is to leave Japan and reenter, or do you believe the company is right?
PS: I know I’m stupid for not checking earlier.
