Back in America I used to buy this oral numbing spray called Cepacol. I would use it whenever I had canker sores or even if I had a cold and a really sore throat. I was wondering if anybody has ever found something similar to it while living here and if so, I’d love to know the name and where you found it.

I just use whatever throat spray is on sale. The one in my bag now is コフダンのどスプレー, it’s alright.
I also searched for those gum numbing gels that we use for kids when they are teething, or if you have an infection. Never found anything like that in Japan, and my students had no idea what I was talking about
I haven’t tried it with canker sores, but keeping a whole clove between your gums and your cheek can ameliorate some kinds of oral pain.

Step 4 : Optional, go to the pharmacy and explain what you are looking for, you can tell them them you are looking for a product with something that have the same effect as these ingredients, so with a page in Japanese, they should be able to understand what you are looking for.

The product the other person suggested use Povidone-iodine, that is an antiseptic, other product also use Cetylpyridinium chloride as antiseptic, such as Cepacol mouth and in some throat spray. So if you are looking for something that in numbing, then it is not the right product.
