Planning for childcare leave retaliation?

My spouse and I are expecting, and I am planning to announce to my employer that I’ll be taking childcare leave later this year. I have a permanent contract with a mid-sized company and have worked there for several years.

* I’ve seen many stories around the web of workers facing retaliation or pay cuts upon taking leave, and I figure the same is inevitable for me – is there anything I can do to prepare before I speak with my employer?
* Recently a coworker took childcare leave and complained of financial difficulties as they were not paid during their leave. I was under the impression employees on childcare leave are guaranteed a portion of their salary during the period of leave, is this a naive assumption?
