Increasingly a lot of online services insist on using SMS to authenticate you, either as crappy form of 2FA or as the only way to log in. Others use it for account recovery.
I’ve heard a lot about people in other countries (especially the US) getting sim-swapped, where someone tricks customer service people into assigning their number to someone else. Does that ever happen in Japan, or does the system with MVNO codes work too well for it to be worth worrying about? Likewise should I worry about getting my phone number snaffled by hacking into the website of the carrier / MVNO?
Relatedly, can people suggest carriers / MVNOs that seem like they have good account security or tell me which ones I should avoid?
