Foreign credit card/PASMO/Suica/Apple Pay recharge update 2

The original posts are buried, so based on comments, the current situation using foreign credit cards to charge PASMO and Suica via Apple Pay seem to be this:

Foreign AMEX -never had a problem and still OK on both PASMO and Suica

Foreign MasterCard-used to be OK on Suica but not on PASMO, however based on comments, it seems to be OK on both now

Foreign Visa-still does not work on either Suica or PASMO

Personally I used my foreign (US)Visa through Apple Pay to buy a drink on the Japanese Coke On app, and I have used my physical US card at many locations in Japan, so that indicates to me that it’s not a credit card problem nor an Apple Pay in Japan problem. It’s a PASMO/Suica problem.

Unfortunately, PASMO /Suica both say that there should be no problem on their end. They accept foreign credit cards via Apple Pay, and of course from my experience, there was no problem until August 5 this year. They try to say that there must be a problem with the credit card or Apple, but from my use, it can’t be, and besides Apple and my bank both say nothing is wrong on their part.

So if you just want to charge your Apple wallet PASMO/Suica, you can do so with any Japanese credit card (even visa), a non-Japanese AMEX or MasterCard, or at a new type station machine or 7-11 ATM where you can lay your phone on the charging device and pay with cash.

Many of us want to use foreign money, and can benefit by collecting travel points on foreign credit cards, so it sucks still that Visa still doesn’t work. There are some technical changes that are happening in the future with 3D secure and something called Stera that I don’t quite understand personally, but I am hoping that the current situation will be resolved sometime in the future
