Will Japan Post deliver to me before they register my address?

Hi,

This question is hard to phrase because I don’t exactly understand what’s going on. When I moved into my new apartment, my estate agent said that once I register my new address with the city hall (done) I need to tell Japan Post that I am now living at this address because the apartment was vacant for a while and JP will still assume it’s vacant if they receive any letters for the apartment (and thus not deliver them).

So I went to JP today, and filled out some paperwork that was to register my new address. I feel like all this paperwork did was to set up mail forwarding, where if anything was addressed to my old address, JP now knows to forward it to the new one. I assume this because the girl was telling me that it won’t be active for 10 days and I should put tape over my old mail box in the interim.

Where I’m getting confused is that I want to order some stuff from Amazon and iHerb. I tried to ask the JP worker if I could get things delivered to the new address now, and she said it’s not a problem, but then went on to say that I’m going to receive a postcard that will ask if I’m living in the new address, and only after that will they accept mail for me at this address.

If you can’t tell I’m super confused.

tl;dr – Just moved into a new place. JP is still processing my new address. Can I get a package delivered to the new address now? Or do I have to wait for JP to realise the apartment is no longer vacant?
