Is there a difference in pronunciation in long う sounds and double お sounds?

Currently learning kanji and these come up a lot, (for example, とうand とお) and I usually end up pronouncing them exactly the same but wanted to know if there was a distinct difference in how they’re pronounced or if it even matters since they’re so similar.
