Debt/loan system in Japan

Hello everybody!

I am currently moving things forward with my Japanese boyfriend and he asked me if I have debt. I explained to him that yes I have a student debt/loan, and he became very scared.
He then asked me if I then don’t have any money and that’s when I realized there’s maybe some difference between the loan system between our two countries.

I am french and to do my studies I got a student loan under my bank (0.9% i think). Here we pay a little money every month during my studies (basically i pay the interests), and then after my studies are done there is a monthly set amount that would be paid back to my bank.

But I still have money on my credit account + my savings account.

Also when you’re a student getting a loan in France your parents are automatically guarantors.

Is the system different in Japan?

Cause my boyfriend thought that would mean I have absolutely no money and I live with the money of my debt. I explained to him a little bit by text but I recommended him to have a discussion about this so he gets all the details and understand that he will not have to pay my debt and I will not have to give all my money to repay it to the bank😭

If someone has any information that would help me to get his reaction better, or to know about any cultural difference I would really appreciate it!
