  1. Paid around the same amount for similar sushi at 函太郎(Kantarô, a Hokkaido based chain conveyor belt sushi place) and it came with tea and soup

  2. ¥1450 for the sushi. Supermarket sushi is sometimes hit or miss depending on the chain. Tokyo Life stores at lunchtime are pretty good. Kyoto stores the rice is somewhat compacted and not as good. Overall I’ll give supermarket sushi a 5-6 rating for convenience and price but probably a 4-5 for taste, rice too compact, not seasoned enough for me (personally). I love supermarket food

  3. Seeing the price in dollars makes it feel much cheaper than 1450 yen feels to me. To be fair I haven’t used dollars in 7 years, but 9 dollar sushi sounds a lot cheaper than 1500 yen sushi. Really weird that they’re almost the same.

On a similar note this had me convert my salary to dollars at a whim. I make less now than I did 7 years ago in terms of dollars even though I make over a million more yen per year now (and definitely feel as if I have more money). Just kinda weird how that works.

  4. I love the tableware. I’m obsessed with the little dish.

Edit: weird downvote. I still love it and I’m really curious of the design.

  5. After 5pm at a lot of stores, that sushi made in the morning is now 20-30% off

  6. Looking at this sushi made me really sad because it looks 10× better than sushi in supermarket nearby me

  7. Looks like that’s made by Katsumidori so it’s going to be higher quality than your average supermarket sushi, which is still usually pretty good.

Bonus tip. If you want to raise the quality of any take home sushi and you have access to a microwave oven, try the following. Remove the fish and gently and quickly rinse under cold water and pat the fish dry with a paper towel (only for those that don’t have sauce like unagi or toppings like ikura and uni). Lightly warm the rice in the microwave and reassemble. This should give it a more freshly made taste.

The warmed rice will now be more ‘fluffy’ and will make the vinegar more fragrant and the quick rinse will make the fish taste more fresh.

  8. My Kroger has stuff like this, it’s my only time having sushi and I think they’re delicious.

  9. Damn that would have been $14.50 a few years ago the yen is not doing well.

  10. That’s some amazing looking sushi, especially for a supermarket. It looks better than most of the sushi restaurants in my neck of the woods.
