Freelance whilst on Instructor Visa

Hey,

I am currently on an Instructor status visa and work full time as an ALT.

I wanted to pick up some freelance creative work over the summer to help me earn a bit of extra money, as the wages are poor as an ALT and I have some expenses to pay for coming up at the end of the year (shaken that kind of stuff) but I can’t continue being an ALT if the pay remains like it is.

Anyway, my company refused because I couldn’t provide them hours (they never asked for these actually) but also because I didn’t have a fixed employer’s name/address etc. but by its nature freelance doing piece work generally doesn’t have one single employer.

I’ve read a lot online about this and it seems like it could be possible to do this by self-sponsoring; but I’m not sure where to start.

I’d be looking to continue my ALT work and just pick up some extra work during the vacations. Some of the companies wouldn’t necessarily be Japanese companies.

Anybody else have any experiences with this? I wanted to give this a shot before I have to start looking for work elsewhere.

Thank you.
