The food filter in the sink gets clogged from washing protein smoothie bottles

In Japan it seems there is a plastic basket acting as a food filter inside the kitchen sink.
This seems to be getting clogged after a few weeks of washing my protein smoothie bottles.

If I simply removed this filter, there is a horrible smell that comes up from the pipe.
Could someone please advise if there is any better replacement for this that I could purchase?

  1. You know you are supposed to cover that plastic basket with little nets and the toss the nets like once a day maybe two days, right ? You just go to Daiso and you get like 50-70 nets for like 100 yen.

  2. The filter is doing its job Clean the filter every day. Scrape the chunkier bits into the rubbish. Wash the metal pet. Now and then, clean the part below it with bleach or vinegar etc.

  3. If your basket filter is getting clogged with the gunk from your shakes, there’s still probably a lot that is getting through and is clogging your sink. That bacteria and inability for water to flow properly will cause your pipes/drain to smell bad.

There’s a lot of articles online of safe remedies to pour down the drains to help dislodge and clean anything that may be trapped down there.

Additionally some pipe shapes really don’t help with blocking the sewer smell. So if your pipe is straight and doesn’t have a bend to trap water to prevent the sewer smell that could also be it.

It would also help getting a finer food filter that’s more of a mesh rather than just the basket to really make sure you’re not dumping additional food particles from your smoothies down there.

  4. ….a few *weeks*? no shit, dude. gotta clean more often than that, especially you’re emptying gloopy stuff

  5. There’s a plastic filter and then you place a cloth like filter on top of it and swap the cloth like filter almost every day.

My wife puts a 10 yen coin in between the plastic filter and the cloth filter and it helps with preventing odor somehow…………..

The idea of not cleaning these every day or two kind of makes me feel sick. I’m surprised it’s not getting clogged more often!

Just rinse it at the end of the day. It will stay nice and clean.

  7. Could you not water down your leftover protein smoothie and drink the rest from the bottle after each use so you have less probability of goopy sink drain?

  8. If your smoothies are clogging up the filter, removing the filter could eventually lead to your smoothies clogging up your pipes.

Sounds to me like the filters are doing their job. Perhaps consume your smoothies, and water down whatever you’re pouring out?

  9. If something is really goopy I’d just scrape it right into a plastic bag and put that into the trash; then rinse off whatever is left.

Also clean the drains daily. Use the little plastic net to catch chunks of food and such.

  10. Maybe wipe the inside of your bottle clean with a small bit of paper towel or something first.

Also use the nets for your kitchen sink strainer!
