Maintaining US phone service while living in Japan?

My company has been paying for me to have international data roaming since I moved to Japan in 2020 (remote work, not related to my role at the company).

This year they’ve decided that they don’t want to keep paying a premium for me to have daily data roaming.

I’d like to keep my US number (I’ve had it for over a decade) and have considered some of the parking services that will just hold it. Some even can forward SMS as email (e.g. two-factor auth codes), although it’s not guaranteed to work since the service is technically using a land line and the sender may detect that and choose not to send.

I’m fine with getting local service through AU, and my phone has a physical SIM slot + eSIM. I’m wondering if anyone has experience with using eSIM for carrying their US service, and if so, what kind of plan you have with your provider while you live in Japan.
