Weekly discussion and small questions thread

In response to user feedback, this is a recurring thread for general discussion about learning Japanese, and for asking your questions about grammar, learning resources, and so on. Let’s come together and share our successes, what we’ve been reading or watching and chat about the ups and downs of Japanese learning.

The /r/Japanese rules (see [here](https://www.reddit.com/r/japanese/about/rules/)) still apply! Translation requests still belong in /r/translator and we ask that you be helpful and considerate of both your own level and the level of the person you’re responding to. If you have a question, please check the subreddit’s [frequently asked questions](https://www.reddit.com/r/japanese/?f=flair_name%3A%22FAQ%E3%83%BB%E3%82%88%E3%81%8F%E3%81%82%E3%82%8B%E8%B3%AA%E5%95%8F%22), but we won’t be as strict as usual on the rules here as we are for standalone threads.

  1. I’ve read that “san” and other title words are never used in reference to oneself, yet I’ve seen many youtubers with nicknames like “(name)-san” for example. So, how is it really? Would Japanese people ever use title word referencing themselves?

  2. Can you say お腹はすいた? Is it only お腹がすいた? if not why can’t はused in this sentence?

  3. I’m trying to learn Japanese, I’ve got no experience in the language. I’m using Duolingo and Memrise for learning apps. But I was also wondering how good of an idea would it be to play games and watch shows in the language. People say it’s a good way to jump in and see how the language is used and written (in subtitles or speech boxes).
Any advice for me? Do’s and do not’s?

  4. I’d like to learn some more overall about different dialects, but I don’t know if there are specific books I should get, or if it’s something that can wait until later. Would like to know at least a little bit on the most widely spoken ones, excepting of course 標準語 (standard Japanese). Kansai, Akita, Kyushu, etc.

  5. Hie, hope I am posting in the right place. How to read English to Japanese dictionary?

I wrote here Apple in search.
As you can see, it shows many japanese words and above them, it’s written as ringo , heika ,hyouka, and there are many such words. Are these the different words one can use for Apple? For eg: For Apple, do we say ringo in Japanese?
While writing down alphabets can we use either hiragana or katakana alphabets?

  6. what does everyone think about matt vs. japan’s project uproot thing? scam? real results? personally, i think pitch accent is very important as they’re saying but the word choice they’re using is so absolute and extreme.
