The EVIL vs Moxley match has clearly been a bit of a misstep as it is both unfavoured by foreign and domestic audiences.
I think a lot of us expected Naito to be challenging here and win the title back then be the champ heading it to Forbidden Door. Perhaps they would prefer him to win it back in front of the US audiences.
Now what would have been a better match up for this spot. Factors to consider the challenger wouldn't be winning, trying to not disrupt the rest of the card, as well as being a good draw for both international and domestic audiences.
The options:
Yota Tsuji:The youngsters have been stepping up to the plate to take on Moxley. This would make sense with thaf in mind as well as Tsuji's main character point of shooting his shot (and then often missing). It would also flow nicely into a match vs Tsuji's leader Naito. It would be an entertaining match and build as well as a good showcase for Tsuji. He is also not doing anything on dominion. Hopefully, he can challenge for the 6 man championship with Hiromu and Bushi.
Zack Sabre Jr: We were meant to get this match at the start of 2020, but pandemic and all that happened. Zack has been calling for a world title match since WK. But I feel it would be a waste if it was Match up he probably isn't winning. Also, NJPW has not gone gaijin vs gaijin for a Dominion main event at least not recently.
Tomohiro Ishii: Well this would obviously force a shake up with the TV title match but that is probably an easy solve to plug someone else in. Ishii and Moxley have their obvious history and chemistry which would draw the international fans, however, Ishii rarely gets to main event major shows. But is he really that less of a draw compared to EVIL?
Konosuke Takeshita: Now they came to some sort of an agreement ot have Moxley beat Takeshita. I'm sure they could have worked out a way to save this match for Dominion. Either having Takeshita win the eliminator or doing something like Mox & Umino/Claudio vs Takeshita & Fletcher at DoN. This wouldn't be that far fetched with the UJPW partnership but two non NJPW guys in the main event of Dominion would be unlikely.
