How to register my baby as a Japanese citizen in the U.S.?

Background:

I was born in the U.S. to Japanese parents that never naturalize and become U.S. citizens. My dad did however register me when I was born at the Japanese embassy in LA. I never renounce my Japanese citizenship, but only have and use my U.S. passport throughout the years.

Now:

As I grow older especially after my parents had moved back to Japan a couple years ago, I think more and more of who I am and where my roots come from. We are also expecting a baby. I am thinking to give my kids a chance to know their grandparents country and perhaps one day, if they want to, they could move back there.

Question:

How can I register my child in the Japanese embassy like my dad did for me if the only thing I have to prove my Japanese citizenship is the registration certificate back then?
