YouTube comments as a source of casual Japanese

I've found that YouTube comments are a good way to learn simple, casual language especially rude and sarcastic jokes. For example this video about the lake 漫湖 has this comment:

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=94HsMoNFyM0&pp=ygUG5ryr5rmW

漫湖の近くの中学出身です。中1の行事で本当に漫湖の風景をテーマにする写生大会があります。

The joke here is that the lake has a name that sounds like "pussy" (まんこ) and the school has a "sketch competition" (写生大会) which sounds like an "ejaculation competition" (射精大会).

どうして笑うんだい?漫湖は立派な湖の名前だよ。

Sarcastic comment pretending not to understand why anyone finds the lake funny.

Any amusing video will have comments like this.

  1. Yeah I’ve noticed the same with Twitter as well (from following Japanese artists)

  2. Just don’t take the views as broadly representative necessarily. There are many different rabbit holes that will appear as if there’s a multitude of people sharing the same views when really it’s some slice of society that ended up in the same place
