Kabukicho: guys in suits with earpieces in?

Was in Shinjuku and specifically Kabukicho at night and saw a bunch of guys in an area of a few streets. They were generally all wearing sunglasses, were in suits, and had earpieces in. Any idea who those guys are?

I thought that maybe they were security guards, but they were spread out over a few blocks and there didn't seem any particular building or thing they were guarding. Plus, why would they be wearing sunglasses at night?

  1. I’ve been told yakuza have been known to keep watch in less reputable areas that might attract tourists, keeping the area free of petty crime in order to avoid foreigners from inadvertently getting involved in their business, but I don’t know how true that is. The person who told me this suggested there’s no safer place to be. Take that with a grain of salt, though. Could just be bouncers at clubs.

  2. I’ve seen them in other entertainment districts in Osaka. These guys work for hostess clubs and other such establishments, they are trying to get passerbys into their clubs and they coordinate through the earpieces.
They might also keep an eye on the girls on the street (who are as well trying to get passerbys into the clubs), see that they are safe.
