Japanese Slang “Get scared”

ビビる」(bibiru)

It means: to get scared, to get frightened

This is a slang way of saying “怖こわがる."

We often use it in the form of “ビビってる” as “怖こわい.”

And “ビビった。” means “I was surprised,” “I (almost) freaked out.”

Examples:

ビビってるの?(Are you scared?)

ビビらせないでよ!(Don’t scare me!)

・さっきドアがうまく開かなくてビビった。(I freaked out when I had trouble opening the door just a while ago.)

In our YouTube video, we made a skit about this slang. Go check it if you are interested! You can find various contents there.

  1. This is a great video. I especially like that you make the videos concise and to the point. The acting is kinda fun, too.

  2. The etymology is onomatopoeia, which is based on the rubbing sound of armor. You may ビビる if many soldiers come in.

  3. I’ve heard this in a song and now it’s gonna bother me that I can’t remember which one 😭
