I have T-Mobile One (in the United States) and will be in Japan for an extended period of time. I was just wondering if I would have to get a new Japanese phone/plan for while I’m over there or if anyone else is using this plan while abroad?

I believe you can just add international to your phone line. Otherwise as long as you’re using iPhone you can use WiFi to send texts free/ what’s app for your calls and texts.
If you’re a tourist, no. If you’re a resident you’ll likely need a Japanese number to register for basic amenities. Japanese websites, particularly, don’t like it when you try to enter anything out of the norm. But, that’s a more subjective answer that will depend on your individual circumstances than for every single instance.
How long is extended? When I called T-Mobile, they said you can use the number for 90 days before they suspend the line.
I used it in Japan (and Okinawa) for two months no problem. 5GB/month of data but calling costs money. I made a few calls and no issues with the service.
I have T-Mobile with magenta here in oki since Feb 2022, and no issues at all
This depends entirely on how many locals you expect to call you. Most folks use line, and you can activate with a US number. If you need people to voice call you on the regular, you should get a local number. They have cheap “050” VoIP numbers, but these can’t be used with most SMS authentication schemes.
