What type of certificate do I need to teach English in Japan and abroad?

I have heard about TEFOL and CELTA but I’m confused about which company to get it from as there seem to be so many. Are their any specific requirements for Japan? If I helps I have passed JLPT N3 and have a college degree.

  1. In Japan, from what I know for entry level jobs at Eikaiwas or as an ALT all you need is a degree and to be from a country recognized as being English speaking however I’m sure a TEFL may bump up your resume. A certificate and relevant experience would get you a better job at an international school or at a University if you are aiming towards that.

  2. To teach English in Japan you need either a teaching certificate (which effectively means going to a university in Japan and earning the certificate there), a special teaching certificate available in some, but not all, places and (as I understand) given mainly to people who already live in Japan and are working in education, or a post-graduate degree (usually M.A. or Ph.D.) in a relevant field. These would be for teaching in primary or secondary school, primary or secondary school, or university, respectively.

To work in a private or international school, experience in teaching, sometimes home-country teaching certification or license, and a relevant degree are usually effectively required.

To work in a commercial language school or as an assistant language teacher, you need a university degree and schooling in English for more than 12 (I think) years.

  3. I actually have a TESOL certificate or whatever. Never been asked to show it or anything. Just say you have one.
