Nikko in October- too busy to enjoy?

I’m planning on going to Nikko in mid October. For those who have been, are the crowds just so insane that it’s difficult to enjoy?

I’m really scared to make the journey from Tokyo just to be stuck in huge crowds/bus lines. I’m considering staying for one night as well, but I only have a week in Japan and I’m trying to make the most of my time, but still be able to see some autumn colors and Nikko is supposed to have gorgeous trees during this time. I really want to see the fall leaves but I don’t think I want to be a sardine on a bus with their limited public transport.

If I stay the night, will I be able to get to the lake earlier in the morning and “miss any traffic” that might be the biggest hindrance for me? Thats where I’ve read some horror stories of the bus ride being very long.

If I wanted to see fall colors in October, do you have any other suggestions?
