In response to user feedback, this is a recurring thread for general discussion about learning Japanese, and for asking your questions about grammar, learning resources, and so on. Let’s come together and share our successes, what we’ve been reading or watching and chat about the ups and downs of Japanese learning.
The /r/Japanese rules (see [here](https://www.reddit.com/r/japanese/about/rules/)) still apply! Translation requests still belong in /r/translator and we ask that you be helpful and considerate of both your own level and the level of the person you’re responding to. What is the best free or relatively cheap Japanese learning curriculum you’d recommend? I am an absolute beginner.
What are the difference between “Oba-chan(auntie)” and Oba-san(aunt)? how are they used in Japan?
Hi! I’m naming a Japanese character in a little thing I’m working on, and I want to make sure her name makes sense.
Her name is Tsubaki Nanako (椿 菜々子) (that’s family name, and then first name) I know Tsubaki is mostly used as a first name, but I chose it for its meaning in flower language.
She looks tough, but she’s actually very shy and sensitive, and constantly falling in love with people.
I’m wondering if this makes sense as a Japanese name, and makes sense for her character. Thanks so much! 😀

Hi everyone! Is there a specific counter for geographic features? I need to describe an area with three mountains, would I use ‘dai’, so ‘sandaiyama’? . Thanks 😊
