I was walking at night(9/10pm) in kyoto back to my hotel from a ramen restaurant(45m walk). I had 3 of my friends walking with me. I saw a vending machine with some trash cans near it. I had a soda can that I wanted to get rid of so i went there and threw it. However, my friends got quite ahead of me and now i was walking alone but I could still see them far ahead.
Suddenly out of nowhere a dude in his 20s is right next to me wearing a black t shirt a black pants and a black surgical mask under his mouth. He asks me in Japanese if I speak Japanese. I could tell by his Japanese accent that he was probably Japanese so I responded back “I don’t speak Japanese but I’m trying to learn it” in Japanese. He gets kinda excited about it and asks me where I’m from. I told him “America” and he kept trying to make small talk in English which I didn’t mind cuz i wanted to get closer to my friends. Then he asks me what is my favorite food. I told him ramen. He talked a bit more then he said “I hungry” in a broken English while pointing to his mouth. I tried to stall the convo more between me and him tell i get to my friends but they were still too far away. So after a bit I pretended that ive understood him now and said “ohh ok” and i gave him a few coins i had in my pocket and he left immediately.
He looked quite clean and well shaved so I’m not sure if he was a homeless dude a robber or just a scammer trying to get a quick buck. I just took the loss. I was worried that if I refused he would pull out a knife or something. Tho I was planning to run if he asks for more money or my phone.
Idk if I’m overthinking this whole thing, but i figured i would share it here anyways.
