Wanting to move to Japan to work as a 3D Modeller

Hello everyone,

I made a post a while back asking the same question and have some more questions regarding it now that graduation is near me for.

I am from Canada and am currently studying in a 3D Modelling program. I am focusing on being an environmental artist and mainly want to work on games. I have yet to finish my Demo Reel and am still working on it. I wish to work in the 3D Industry in Japan after I graduate or in the future. I consider myself to be fluent in Japanese and have been speaking it on a daily basis with friends online but I cannot read Kanji. I have some questions for people who are in the industry in Japan.

  1. I was wondering if it is better to start looking for a job in Japan right after I finish school in Canada or get some work experience in the industry beforehand? I heard from a friend that in Japan there is 新卒採用 and 中途採用 and was wondering if those would apply to a foreigner as well.

  2. How can I make connections with people in the 3D Industry who are in Japan? Are there certain websites or discord servers?

  3. What does the Japanese Industry look for in a portfolio? Any tips would be great.
