How can I watch Studio Ghibli movies in Japanese without eng subtitles on?

Sorry if this has been brought up before.

I live in the US. Both on my DVDs and on HBO Max, the “Japanese audio” versions of the movies have English subtitles baked into them. Is the only workaround to get a Japanese dvd/blu-ray player and the Japanese disc?

(And that disc would probably have Japanese closed captioning too, right? That would be cool)

I don’t want to pirate anything. Looking for legitimate ways to watch the movies. The only streaming service here that has them is HBO Max (Netflix doesn’t, Hulu doesn’t). Amazon Prime has the Japanese language versions on sale for rent or to purchase, but I don’t know if the subtitles are stuck to the videos or if they are toggle-able.

Thanks.
