what is the function of -na adjectives?

all the resources I’ve found, even other posts on here, just say you need them to conjugate certain adjectives, but they don’t say why. In English, when you conjugate something, you are denoting tense. In Japanese, I cannot find a reason other than “just because”. As far as I can tell, the sentence remains exactly the same with or without the “na” in it. Even Duolingo wasn’t requiring na adjectives on words like kirei in sentences until they introduced “na” much later (without explaining anything about them, btw).

Does anybody have a simple explanation?
