Niche subject, but I’ve been trying to learn hentaigana / actually get decent at cursive for a few weeks now. Yesterday I got the general gist of each sentence in [this awful bastard piece of paper](https://www.reddit.com/r/translator/comments/1egmsda/japaneseenglish_a_note_that_came_inside_an/) and I feel like a goddamn wizard lol
Just reached level 4 of Wanikani after about 3 weeks. It feels pretty cool to be able to look at a Japanese text and recognize some of the words (or at least some individual kanji) even if I can’t understand the sentence. I’m kind of amazed that I already know over half the N5 kanji.
I’m slowly working through Genki I right now and it’s harder to stay focused and do the exercises. I often struggled to stay focused in school and Genki feels like more of that, but I understand that the grammar it teaches is important. I tried doing some workbook exercises online with [this tool](https://sethclydesdale.github.io/genki-study-resources/lessons-3rd/) and I liked that it gave me more immediate gratification.
I finished my first novel yesterday! Still crazy to think about. I feel it was just recently I was celebrating reading my first manga volume, yet this is a huge step up.
Already onto the next novel, and the next big hurdle will be watching an episode of a show for the first time.
Lately I feel like my success is not giving up. Busy work and family life led to having little to no time but I still try to squeeze an hour of anki / kanji study / duo to review and learn. I try to sit down to genki but there’s always something that has to disturb it, I’m happy I can at least sit down with apps and do some work here and there..
Can I ask what Wanikani is? Or Genki?
Wrote my first review for something in Japanese, my Japanese still sucks bad but been talking to a creator a lot and felt it was fine to commit to it. End result is probably okay enough. Also managed to write 500++ character long message in under 10 minutes without having to constantly look things up as references. I guess writing over 35k characters worth of writing last month (and subsequent break) is having an impact.
