Solo travel miyakojima as an English speaking tourist

Hello, I’m going to be doing a month in Japan from sept 15 – Oct 15. The last leg of my trip I wanted to do miyakojima for 4 nights. But I have a family member who met a Japanese girl and lives in Kyoto with her and he keeps telling me I will not enjoy the island and no one speaks English and I will not be welcomed. Granted this family member has a bee in their bonnet for no apparent reason (always has) and basically gives me every reason in the book not to come to Japan at all even though I constantly hear how great things are when he forgets I have a trip planned. Anyways just wanted to know what the scene is truly like out there I’m a 28 year old Canadian male solo travelling. I won’t be meeting him or his girlfriend while I’m there since “she is sick of being the translator for everyone” (the only person she’s had to translate for is him since no other family has gone to visit).
