Moving to Japan in January/February, when should i start applying to jobs?

I'm going to Japan on a Work Holiday Visa either in January or February. My original plan was to travel across the country slowly for the year, but after some consideration I have decided to stay in one location and work for a few months.

While I don't have a university degree, some people suggested I can still get a job in a school teaching English. Is this correct?

Either way, what would be the best time to start handing out resumes? Should my resume be in Japanese or the Japanese style? What kind of jobs do you recommend?

Any other pieces of advice would be great.
