Do Japanese people not write cursive?

I remember years ago I showed cursive characters (to a Japanese friend I met on twitter and I met up with on a study trip. who was like 15 years older than me). So I asked if she could read them as I couldn't. She said she can only make out some stuff but that her grandma definitely could have not sure if she also said her mom could my memory is foggy. If I look up the Japanese word for handwriting on google images, they basically write in a bit less strict forms of print/block letters (kaisho/kaishu). However when I look up chinese words for handwriting, I get a lot of semi cursive (gyousho/xingshu) and cursive (sousho/caoshu). In English for chinese I get reddit threads saying it looks childish if you write like print for most things.

What's up with that?
