Dotonbori is a shithole!

We have been in Japan for a couple of months and in Osaka for two weeks. Last night we finally got around to visiting Dotonbori for some Sapporo Ramen and some jazz and, frankly, we were appalled. It’s the first time we have ever seen garbage and trash in the streets, I saw a rat run along the edge of a pile of trash, dead cockroaches in the street and it literally smelled of garbage and urine. This was in the side streets several blocks from the super crowded Times Square sort of area.

Granted, we have only been to Hakodate, Sapporo, Tokyo, Kyoto and Hakone, but I never expected to see such filth in a Japanese city. We have been staying down the road near the Sakuragawa station and it’s nothing like what we saw Sunday night. The side streets here are not that much less crowded at night than side streets in Dotonbori, but there isn’t garbage and trash piled up everywhere and strewn on the roads. WTF is the story? We might as well have been in Thailand!

The miso ramen and the Jazz bar were good though…..
