Making special material for a native speaker as an ALT?

ALT in an elementary school here.

I have a student in one of my higher grades who transferred in from America. He's Japanese but was raised in New York and speaks English just like any other American kid his age. Needless to say, English class is crushingly boring for him.

Lately he's been acting out a bit, either tuning out of the class entirely or just shouting out the answer immediately with a sarcastic tone.

Should I try making individual assignments for him, appropriate for a kid in a Western country his age? I'm responsible for the class; the HRT has low English ability and basically leaves me to run things as I see fit.

He's not a bad kid, the boredom of kindergarten level work would make any kid act out. Would appreciate any suggestions.
