Hokkaido (Biei + Daisetsuzan National Park)

Planning my first trip to Hokkaido for a couple of weeks time, trying to escape some of the Tokyo heat!

I am thinking of renting a car for a few days from Asahikawa and am interested in some nature/good views (Tomita farm and Shirogane blue pond are already on the list). The national park nearby interests me as we don't really have these where i am from and id like to see some mountain views or waterfalls/something of this genre while im there, ideally via cable car or drive.

Does anyone have any specific recommendations for things of this nature to do in the area? I cant drive for too long in one go, and I cant do any strenuous hikes in these summer temperatures but short walks/drives are very manageable.

All of the accommodation near Biei is very expensive, is this the best place to stay for access to the national park or is Asahikawa or somewhere else closer? Cant seem to suss it out from google maps. I was considering taking the Daisetsuzan Asahidake Ropeway for a view from the top, is this worthwhile? Is there anything more easily accessible as this is still over an hour away from Asahikawa?

Thanks
