According to the latest model of the Japan Meteorological Agency, published at noon 08/15/24, Typhoon #7 is projected to NOT make landfall in the Tokyo area, but to skirt Chiba once again on its way up north. Do not buy into sensational posts made by redditors with little Tokyo experience.

According to the model, the storm is expected to come closest to the Chiba area on Friday afternoon/evening, but it should stay in the ocean. This is a common pattern for Tokyo typhoons. Times on the map are in UTC (Greenwich Mean Time), 03:00 UTC equals 12:00 noon Tokyo time.

Most likely, Tokyo will be subjected to heavy rainfall, mixed with occasional hail. Do not plan on any outside activities on Friday. The Tokyo-Nagoya Shinkansen will not run on Friday, several others also might be canceled. Friday is not a good time to plan for flights in and out of Tokyo. If you have scheduled flights, leave your email/sms address with your airline, and check on flight status before heading to the airport. Haneda Departures. Narita Departures. JR East announcements.

Come Saturday, everything is expected to be back to normal.

Keep your phones, power banks and flashlights charged for the unlikely chance of a power outage in the city. Take the laundry in, secure any items that could fly away, and have a nice day.
