Getting PR while having a foreign spouse?

I’ve lived in Japan for over 30 years on a specialist/humanities visa and will soon apply for PR (by myself, not thru an agency).

My wife is non-Japanese and on my dependent’s visa, (and she’s never paid nenkin). What happens to her status? Can she remain on my dependents visa if I get PR? Or will she need to apply for a “spouse of permanent resident visa”? I ask, because we plan to leave Japan shortly after my PR comes thru (if it does come thru), and maybe won’t have time to wait for her application.
