What is the phenomenon where certain words in Japanese (Yamato Kotoba) are formed by quite literally concatenating them with others?

For instance, 卵 (たまご) could very conceivably be a concatenation of 玉子, especially evident by how the こ is voiced into a ご. Other examples include:

• 双子 (ふたご, which if we use native Japanese words would be two-child or 二子),
• 貫く(つらぬく) which could be 面抜く(also read the same way and is conceivably the same meaning, 'drawing out from a surface' or penetrating)

I probably know a number of other examples but can't exactly resurface them in my head. Also I'd like to place special emphasis on 貫く as it is never ever mentioned as 面抜く aside from my funky theory, but I do believe its origin is what I mentioned. More examples would be appreciated.
