My kid will be attending a new school and I have applied for a rail pass, but the school are not in a position to help. The journey is quite a lot (6,500 a week), so this bites quite hard. Any ideas of what I else I can do, or how I can do to lower the cost? This is the reply from the school:
[schoolname] students cannot purchase a students' concession train pass. To purchase such a pass, a unique school number given by JR is required and they give that number only to Japanese schools (=ichijoko) and “miscellaneous school” (=kakushu gakko) approved by the Japanese government (Ref. Article 134 of School Education Law). Run by a public limited company, [schoolname] cannot be ichijoko and cannot fulfill all the conditions to be kakushu gakko, either.
