Places to visit between Kyoto to Tokyo

Hi Folk!
Me and 3 friends are going to Japan for the first time in October. Our first stop will be Osaka where we will stay 2 nights and then head over to Nara and then to Kyoto where we will also stay 2 nights. After Kyoto we want to rent a car and wander around Japan till Tokyo which will be our last stop of our journey. For our journey between Kyoto and Tokyo we would love to see a few stops such as country side etc. For now we are not thinking about to get a JR Pass since it is expensive, that’s why we thought about renting a car for Kyoto – Tokyo.

We already have the following places on our list:
– Izu
– Mt. Fuji
– Hakone (for onsen and maybe to stay overnight there)
– and Kamakura

We thought these places make sense since these seem to be close to each other and close to Tokyo. But we don’t know where to stay exactly overnight and where to do just a day trip and then move on.

Do you have any recommendations which places we could additionally visit on our route Kyoto – Tokyo or is this already enough and good places to visit?

And do you generally think renting a car would make sense? I already read a lot about this and I still dont have a feeling of if this is a good idea or not. Some do recommend and some not..

For this Kyoto – Tokyo route we will have approx. 4 days.

Thank you!
