After taking our family through the golden route and Nikko, partner and I are wanting to do an off the beaten path route just the two of us. The plan so far includes a lot of hotel changes, which is fine with us because we've got a slower beginning and end of trip planned. What I had in mind is listed below, I had a few questions about it:
I'm thinking about doing an overnight in Otaru, Noboribetsu, or Hakodate in Hokkaido before our AirBNB in Sapporo. If you were to pick, what would you do? Any specific hotel recommendations?
In order to made the overnight happen, I'd probably need to sacrifice somewhere else. Where would you skip out if you had to pick?

- "Smile" sight seeing train > train to Hirosaki

- Explore on bikes/foot

- Flight Aomori to Sapporo
OR - overnight in Otaru, Noboribetsu, Hakodate
